Dormant Ember was founded in fall of 2006 out of a desire to create music free of rules, obligation, labels and genre. After several months of regular weekly practices and the departure and welcoming of good friends, the band decided to share the creativity they enjoyed as a group with those that would welcome them. Various community festivals, fundraising events around southern Manitoba including a stop in Dauphin for a festival have all been very memorable. None of which, however, as memorable as hearing two of the three tracks on their debut EP, recorded professionally in the fall of 2009, receive local radio airplay. The year 2010 started as an exciting time for the band as they had begun to develop a unique identity and sound blending carefully selected and arranged cover songs with original material. Playing venues like Steinbach’s Summer in the City Festival gave the group a chance to share the stage with rock icons Tom Cochrane and Loverboy. Coming down off the performing season, the fall of 2010 had been set aside to write new material but instead it found the band restructuring after parting ways with one of the founding members. After a brief hiatus in late 2010, the vacancy was filled and early 2011 saw the band rehearsing once again and writing new material in preparation for the next chapter in their story.
The sound of Dormant Ember is a compilation of the many collective influences of the band members spanning decades of musical trends. Softer ballads like The Expanse are reminiscent of classic adult contemporary and tracks like Suffer and Sing and Rattle My Cage feature a progressive rock flavour while songs like Stop the Noise are just straight up rock. Whatever you want to call it, everything Dormant Ember does comes from the heart. To label anything they do is up to the listener; the band will only call it honest.
